Pour tout écouter de Peter Dunton

Peter Dunton est pour moi une des perles découvertes ces dernières années. Comment, grâce aux vertus de la vidéo — et principalement de Youtube, admettons-le –, une grande partie de la librairie musicale universelle est à se reconstituer.

Membre de différentes formations, dont T2 et Please, il compose paroles et mélodies de ces trésors d’une grande sensibilité qui ont échappé à la popularité par un étrange phénomène assez indéfinissable.

Outre une cause directe de cette omission des tourne-disques de la plupart des foyers, le caractère non orthodoxe et difficilement commercialisable selon les normes établies, dans les années 1970. Ce phénomène nous rappelle quelque chose de Nick Drake, également du pays de la Couronne. Bien qu’à l’opposé de la mélancolie du jeune homme tristement disparu, Peter Dunton a vécu jusqu’en janvier 2022, toujours actif musicalement dans un cercle restreint d’amateurs, proposant des airs réjouissants, attendrissants, souvent aussi profonds qu’énergiques.

Please were formed by Peter Dunton and Bernie Jinks in late 1967. They had just returned to Britain from Germany where they had played with Neon Pearl, which also included their third member Jurgen Ermisch. The fourth original member Adrian Gurvitz later co-founded The Gun.

If Sonny Rollins is the Saxophone Colossus (and he isI love Sonny Rollins, a true lion of jazz), surely Peter Dunton is a top contender for Underground Psychedelia Colossus: the Flies; songwriting for Infinity; Neon Pearl (1967); Gun (1969); Please (1967 and 1969), and of course, the band he is best known for, one of the most important underground psychedelic bands to ever devise trippy music and lay it down on tape, T2 (1969-1972).
